    • Reusing and Recycling

      • Seek responsible ways to reuse or recycle your stuff. Remember that safe recycling or disposal can be a challenge, so regularly ask where and how your old items will be recycled. Even curbside pickup should be regularly evaluated to ensure safe practices are occurring.
        • Use only e-Steward or R2 certified recycling services for outdated electronics.
      • Live on campus? Take advantage of the College's various Green Initiatives.
      • Your old stuff might have another life.
        • Can you repurpose it? There are tons of great reuse tips available through your favorite search engine.
        • Consider contacting local non-profits who might need your old tech.
        • List the items on your local Freecycle
      • In your office or at home:
        • Make two-sided copies and prints.
        • Do not print emails. Save them electronically, and regularly delete what you don't need to save.
        • Circulate original memos instead of making numerous copies.
        • Use one-sided scrap paper for notes and drafts.
        • Use refillable pens, pencils and tape dispensers.
        • Reuse packing polystyrene "peanuts" and other packing materials in future shipments.
        • Turn your computer monitor off when leaving for more than an hour. Monitors use more energy than your computer does.
      • Don't see recycling receptacles when dining or visiting other public venues? Inquire with management.

    • Track energy usage

Using wattage counters, which can be plugged in between a wall outlet and appliance, will provide a read out of the amount of energy a particular electronic device uses.

    • Use Efficient Lighting

Replace traditional light bulbs with CFL or LED lamps. Artificial lighting can account for 15% of a home’s electric use.

  • Power Strips and Smart Strips

Plug rarely used appliances into power strips that can easily be turned on and off all at once. Smart Strips can be used to automatically turn off several items at once when your computer is powered off.
