Updating from Windows 10 to Windows 11 (instructions for personal devices)

Windows-based computers that connect to the Westminster network are required to upgrade their Windows 10 operating system to Windows 11 before October 14, 2025.  Microsoft is discontinuing support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, and will no longer provide security patches or updates.

How to Check Your Windows Version
To verify which version of Windows you are currently running, follow these steps:
1. Select Start and choose Settings
2. Choose System and then choose About
3. Your Windows version and build number will be under Windows Specifications
If your device is running Windows 10, you will see “Windows 10” along with the version number (for example, 22H2).

Devices Not Upgradeable to Windows 11

Not all Windows 10 devices can be upgraded to Windows 11. Microsoft requires certain hardware specifications for Windows 11. If your device does not meet these requirements, it will not be upgradable to Windows 11. You can use Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool to automatically determine eligibility. Visit the official Microsoft website to download and run the tool. Download the PC Health Check app.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Unsupported Devices

If your device is not eligible for a Windows 11 upgrade, you may be able to obtain Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10. Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates provide critical security patches until October 13, 2026, helping keep your device protected while you plan for a hardware upgrade. There is a $30 charge from Microsoft for the Microsoft Extended Security Updates.

To purchase the Microsoft Extended Security Updates:
1. Select Start and choose Settings
2. Choose Windows Update and then Choose Your Enrollment Method
3. Follow the prompts to enroll in the program

Next Steps

1. Check your current Windows version using the steps above.
2. Verify if your device meets the Windows 11 requirements.
3. If upgradeable, plan to update to Windows 11 before October 14, 2025.
4. If not upgradeable, consider the Microsoft Extended Security Updates or purchasing a new or newer device.

If you have any questions or need assistance checking the upgrade status of your device, please reach out to the Help Desk.
